The United States has long championed democratic values and the right of sovereign nations to self-governance. Interfering in the affairs of allied democracies by attempting to undermine or overthrow their elected governments would contradict these core American principles. As a nation founded on ideals of freedom and self-determination, we must respect the democratic processes and choices of our international partners. Engaging in such destabilizing actions would not only violate the sovereignty of our allies, but could irrevocably damage strategic relationships, erode America's global standing as a defender of democracy, and foment greater instability worldwide. It is imperative that we reaffirm our commitment to the sanctity of democratic rule and the right of all peoples to freely choose their leaders through legitimate electoral means.
