The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) provides critical funding and support for essential library services that uplift communities across America. As a librarian, I am deeply concerned about the potentially devastating impact of eliminating this agency. Libraries offer far more than just books - they provide early literacy programs, internet access, job assistance, resources for students and faculty, services for the visually impaired, and opportunities for lifelong learning. Cutting IMLS funding would hamper our ability to serve those who rely on libraries the most, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. I urge you to take a stand against any efforts to defund the IMLS and instead work to preserve this modest yet vital investment in education, workforce development, and equitable access to information for all Americans.
