What parts of social security are you ok breaking?

To: Rep. Maloy

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

April 4

I am deeply concerned about the future of Social Security and the potential for the system to be significantly undermined or "broken" by proposed changes. Recent statements from acting Commissioner Leland Dudek indicate the agency is facing immense pressure from the administration to make drastic cuts, including laying off thousands of employees, closing field offices and service centers, outsourcing customer service, and reducing support for disability determinations. While reform may be needed, these sweeping measures could cripple Social Security's ability to serve the 73 million Americans who rely on it. I urge you to scrutinize any proposals that would drastically restructure this vital program. Cuts of this magnitude risk leaving elderly, disabled, and low-income citizens without the support they have earned through a lifetime of work. The American people deserve a Social Security system that is efficient and sustainable, not one that is torn apart at the seams in pursuit of austerity. I implore you to protect the integrity of Social Security and ensure any changes preserve its core functions and protect its most vulnerable beneficiaries. The financial security of millions is at stake.
