A Reason-Based Argument Against Citizens United’s Legal Fictions

To: Sen. Ossoff, Sen. Warnock

April 1

Corporate Personhood and Money-as-Speech are like April 1 pranks that keep on giving every day of the year. I am a mathematician and, though it’s not strictly mathematical, the absurdity of the consequences of Citizens United can fall along mathematical lines, based on the logic their assumptions appear to defy. It's the kind of joke, or prank, that keeps on springing itself on us, and not just on this particular day of the year, as long as the "Rule of Law" lets it, thanks to the Citizens United decision. Sound reason seems to be less and less welcome in Government of the People (human beings) by/for Big Business (corporations). At the very least, demonstrable good sense and faithfulness to established law has fallen out of favor with the prosperous and powerful, their manipulated minions, and their loyalist suited sycophants: all those temporarily embarrassed millionaires trying like heck to escape their embarrassment and enjoy unearned privilege again. That's what happens when our highest court enshrines clear absurdities as legal truth (that non-human-entities can be equal in personhood, in the eyes of the law, to actual people, or that money, as political donation ability - buying power - distributed extremely unequally among us, should receive equal protection, without donation restrictions, as free speech). If you start with a falsehood, you can imply further falsehood. If you don't care about when a conclusion boils down to something evidently absurd (such as 2 plus 2 equals 5), you will have a harder time catching an initial falsehood. Sound reason based on facts is more restrictive because faithfulness to facts regulates the conclusions you can draw from them, but those super-rich do not want such rationally established regulation to apply to them. Thank the comfortably prosperous men and women of the Supreme Court's Republican majority for that carefully crafted determination. Whatever we do to fight Trumpism now, it will be much more difficult because of these legal fictions. To fight Trumpism/MAGA/manipulation in the future, we need to overturn the disastrous Citizens United decision that flies in the face of so much demonstrable truth and soundly-reasoned fairness to the People (human beings, not corporations).
