The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) should remain untouched as it documents the pivotal experiences and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. President Trump's executive order to "restore truth and sanity" undermines the museum's mission to openly explore the realities of slavery, segregation, and the ongoing struggle for equality. Attempting to whitewash or diminish this vital history would be a disservice to our nation. Rather than erase perspectives, we should embrace the diverse voices and stories that shape America's identity. The NMAAHC offers an invaluable educational resource by preserving artifacts and facilitating open dialogue about our shared, complex heritage. Sanitizing institutional narratives does not promote unity - it breeds ignorance and division. I urge you to uphold the integrity of the NMAAHC and all other Smithsonian museums. Protecting spaces for learning, reflection, and truth-telling strengthens our democracy. Representing the African American experience truthfully and completely should be a source of pride, not censorship. Please oppose any efforts to distort the museum's exhibitions or reinstall monuments that glorify oppression. An accurate portrayal of history can help guide a more just future. What action will you take to protect these vital cultural institutions, including protecting all Smithsonian museums?
