I am writing to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill 58, which seeks to bar North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson from challenging executive orders issued by President Donald Trump. This bill, recently passed by the Senate, represents a significant overreach and undermines the ability of our state's top legal officer to protect the interests of North Carolinians.
The role of the Attorney General is to serve as the chief legal advocate for the people of North Carolina. By restricting the Attorney General's ability to challenge executive orders, this bill effectively strips away a crucial check on federal power and limits our state's capacity to defend itself against potentially harmful policies. It is essential that the Attorney General retains the authority to challenge executive actions that may negatively impact our state, whether it be in the areas of jobs, funding, healthcare, or other vital interests.
Furthermore, this bill appears to be a politically motivated attempt to curtail the powers of a duly elected official. Attorney General Jeff Jackson was elected by the people of North Carolina with the understanding that he would have the authority to challenge federal overreach and protect our state's interests. Senate Bill 58 undermines the democratic process and disregards the will of the voters.
I urge you to reconsider your support for this bill and to prioritize the interests of North Carolinians over partisan politics. It is imperative that we maintain a system of checks and balances that allows our state to stand up against federal actions that may not align with our values or best interests.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope you will take my concerns into consideration and work to ensure that the Attorney General's office remains empowered to protect the people of North Carolina.
