Reconsider Social Security policy changes hindering access, fairness
To: Sen. Warren, Rep. Neal, Sen. Markey

The updated identity proofing requirements and expedited direct deposit changes are concerning and may create unnecessary barriers for many Americans trying to access their hard-earned Social Security benefits. Requiring in-person visits or online authentication for routine transactions could disproportionately impact vulnerable populations like the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with limited internet access. Additionally, shifting to a 100% withholding rate for overpayments without considering individual financial circumstances seems unnecessarily punitive. We urge you to reconsider these policy changes and instead pursue measures that strengthen program integrity while preserving accessibility and fairness for all beneficiaries. Social Security must remain a service Americans can readily access without undue burden.
