An Open Letter

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Denver, CO

April 3

I implore my senators to read what Sen. Chris Murphy posted about why these tariffs are being put into place—it is NOT due to an idiotic economic policy, it’s designed to crush those who oppose him. By forcing companies to come to him to ask for reprieve, he can in turn ask them for loyalty to remove the tariff affecting them or carve out exceptions. Donald Trump isn’t the mastermind of this; he can’t mastermind his way out of a paper bag. He has a cadre of authoritarian hungry tech bros who worship Curtis Yarvin who are doing this because they want a dictatorship. Congress has the power of the purse and you need to put a stop to this like you did yesterday with the help of some republicans to stop the tariffs on Canada. But more importantly, you need to stop giving them any quarter! Cory Booker stood for 25 hours to warn us about impending fascism and immediately after, you joined your colleagues to give unanimous consent to another nominee! Why? Democrats have no spine other than platitudes and strongly worded letters that you know will go nowhere. Even if you know the nominee will eventually get through because you don’t hold the majority you can still hold it up. You can still use parliamentary rules to slow the process of him getting what he wants which is what we need. Stop giving them what they want and do not vote at all for anything the GOP wants. Even formalities. It’s time to start acting like a co-equal branch of government and stop a tyrant who is on the precipice of ruining all this country has stood for for almost 250 years.
