Will we have a repeat of Kent State? Seriously. Are you going to protect green card students at our colleges or will they unlawfully, illegally, and disparagingly be disappeared by our facial government? Mahmoud Khalil reached out for help from the Columbia administration *one day before* ICE detained him.
He said he couldn't sleep from threats he was receiving. He even wrote that he feared ICE "might come to my home."
Look, this is it. The entire ballgame. Either we're a Republic of laws & the Constitution, or we have a dictator. This is fascism, & the impeachment vote should be happening today. Every single university president, law maker, and politician in the country should be out, in front of microphones, condemning this.
On X, the official White House account responded to a post about freeing Mahmoud Khalil by saying, “This is the first arrest of many to come.” Donald Trump ordered a hit to a legally allowed man in our country.
Mahmoud Khalil's rights should be defended for their own sake, and for his unborn child's sake, but they should also be defended on principle and for all of our sakes. The slope is slippery; the rights are crucial.
This may be the biggest free speech crisis in living memory. The president now bragging about detaining a lawful permanent resident and smearing him as 'pro Hamas', no outlining any specific crimes he is accused of or charged with. This is what a fascist takeover looks like.
