An Open Letter
To: Gov. Hochul
From: A constituent in Brooklyn, NY
March 27
The recent detention of a Tufts University student by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over alleged visa violations raises grave concerns about the suppression of free speech on college campuses. As a democratic society, we must safeguard the right to freely express views and engage in open discourse, which are vital for intellectual growth and the exchange of ideas. Universities should be havens for such freedoms, not places where students live in fear of retaliation for speaking out. I urge you to take immediate action to protect international students' rights and prevent ICE from stifling academic freedom under the guise of immigration enforcement. Preserving freedom of expression is crucial for fostering a vibrant democracy.
