Opposition to HB 5101

To: Sen. Brodeur, Gov. DeSantis, Rep. Smith

From: A verified voter in Winter Springs, FL

April 4

I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Bill 5101, which proposes cuts to funding for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), Dual Enrollment, and Career and Professional Education (CAPE) courses in Florida's high schools. As a concerned citizen and supporter of quality education, I believe this bill threatens to undermine the educational opportunities available to Florida’s students, particularly in our high schools. The proposed reduction in funding for these essential programs would have a devastating impact on the ability of students to access advanced coursework that challenges them academically and prepares them for success in higher education and their careers. These programs are integral to helping students develop critical thinking skills, gain college credits, and pursue specialized career pathways. Reducing funding for these programs would limit opportunities for students to reach their full potential, particularly those from low-income or underserved communities who rely on these programs for access to high-level education. In addition to restricting opportunities for academic achievement, the proposed cuts would place an increased burden on Florida’s schools, which already face significant resource challenges. Reductions in funding could lead to fewer qualified teachers, reduced access to professional development, and the elimination of course offerings. Families may also face additional financial hardships due to the increased cost of exams and materials associated with these programs. As a constituent, I urge you to consider the long-term consequences of this bill and vote against HB 5101. Our students deserve the best possible education and access to the programs that will prepare them for a successful future. Cutting funding for these vital educational opportunities will ultimately harm the future of Florida’s students, and by extension, the future of our state. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I respectfully ask that you oppose HB 5101 and advocate for policies that support, rather than hinder, the growth and success of our students.
