I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am concerned about the focus of our executive branch on breaking relationships with our allies and neighbors, such as Canada, without cause or proven provocation.
One clear and recent example of this is the decision to limit Canadian's access to the Haskell Library and Opera House on the border with Vermont. This small but proud institution was established over 100 years ago with the intent of fostering relationships on our border, and it has done exactly that over the years.
For our executive branch to pick this out to bully and disrespect is absurd and exemplifies other recent actions towards Canada. The statements about this library being used for illegal activities such as drugs has not been substantiated with any facts whatsoever. Additionally, multiple accounts state that when Kristi Noem visited the library, she made loud, disrespectful comments about Canada being the 51st state and the U.S.A. being far better.
I am proud of my country and all it stands for. I am ashamed of this recent disrespect towards Canada and its people, from prominent leaders and people in power. This is not right. Attacking and singling out places like this library that have done nothing but good over the years is not right.
Speak up now for respectful diplomacy and relationships with our neighbors and allies. Speak up now for places like the Haskell library that seek to strengthen us, not weaken us. Speak up for leaders that know how to act on a global stage, on behalf of the American people.
