I am writing to express my profound outrage regarding the administration's efforts to grant Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) access to IRS data. This policy is a gross violation of taxpayer privacy laws and an attack on the dignity and safety of immigrant communities across our country.
If implemented, this measure would erode trust in the IRS, creating a chilling effect that discourages tax compliance. Immigrants—many of whom file taxes faithfully using ITINs—contribute billions of dollars annually in taxes, benefiting our public services and infrastructure. This policy risks pushing these contributions underground, to the detriment of all Americans.
Moreover, immigrants are fundamental to Phoenix's economy and society. They bolster industries like construction, healthcare, and hospitality, drive innovation as entrepreneurs, and support local businesses through consumer spending. Immigrants play a key role in revitalizing neighborhoods and strengthening the housing market through rent and homeownership. Targeting these individuals and undermining their safety is not only disgraceful—it is self-sabotaging for our community and country.
This policy would terrorize families, degrade society, and contradict our values of fairness, justice, and opportunity. I urge you to vehemently oppose granting ICE access to IRS data and to stand up for the rights and privacy of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and to seeing action that reflects the values of our district.
