I am writing to express my deep concern about the deportation of non-gang-affiliated individuals to El Salvador, where they face the severe risk of unjust incarceration in a prison system known for its inhumane conditions and indiscriminate treatment of detainees.
Recent reports indicate that El Salvador’s security policies, including mass arrests and an overburdened prison system, have led to the imprisonment of individuals without gang affiliations. Many deportees, despite having no criminal record, are being swept up in crackdowns based on arbitrary criteria such as tattoos, past residence in the U.S., or mere suspicion. The lack of due process and dire prison conditions expose these individuals to violence, overcrowding, and human rights violations.
Deporting individuals who have no ties to criminal organizations into such an environment not only endangers their lives but also contradicts fundamental principles of justice and human rights. It is crucial that policies ensure proper vetting of cases before deportation and that safeguards are in place to prevent wrongful imprisonment.
I urge your office to take immediate action by reviewing current deportation policies and advocating for protections that prevent non-gang members from being wrongfully detained upon arrival in El Salvador. A more humane approach must be adopted to avoid endangering innocent individuals.
Accusing people of crime (whether a citizen or not), convicting and deporting without due process is FUNDAMENTALLY the antithesis of being American. Shame on us.
I appreciate your time and attention to this pressing matter and look forward to your response.
