OPPOSE the TAKE IT DOWN Act (H.R.633)
To: Rep. Boyle
From: A verified voter in Philadelphia, PA
March 27
I urge you to oppose the TAKE IT DOWN Act (H.R.633), which not only fails to effectively protect victims of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), but also manages to fail at protecting free speech and privacy while doing so.
Existing state and federal laws already criminalize NCII.
Instead of creating a brand-new flawed censorship regime, Congress should focus on enforcing and improving current protections.
This bill would require websites and apps to remove content within 48 hours, without proper verification that the material is actually NCII,
The proposed takedown rules have virtually no safeguards, and will be as flagrantly abused as DMCA takedowns are currently.
As currently drafted, the bill also endangers encrypted services, potentially forcing them to weaken security and monitor private conversations.
H.R.633 will not just result in censorship of lawful speech, it will create a de facto Lèse-majesté law for both oligarchs and an overreaching Executive branch, both of whom see themselves as neofeudal lords.
Please reject H.R.633 and support policies that protect victims without sacrificing free expression or digital security.
