As a BIPOC and immunocompromised individual, I am writing to voice my strong opposition to any measures that would criminalize mask-wearing in New York. Masking is a crucial tool for protecting public health, particularly for vulnerable communities like mine. I have the right to safeguard my wellbeing without fear of harassment or punishment. Masks are an essential medical device that allow immunocompromised people to participate in society while mitigating risks. Attempting to ban or restrict their use would endanger our health and safety. Furthermore, history shows that such laws have been disproportionately enforced against marginalized groups, including BIPOC communities. I urge Leader Stewart-Cousins to oppose mask bans in negotiations. Additionally, I urge you to oppose Hochul's inclusion of any anti-mask measures in the state budget. I urge you to reject any anti-mask policies and uphold every New Yorker's right to make personal health choices without stigma or criminalization. Masking saves lives - please do not compromise public welfare for misguided security theater.
