Ban predatory surveillance pricing to protect consumer rights

To: Gov. Youngkin, Sen. Hashmi, Del. Coyner

From: A constituent in Chester, VA

March 4

Surveillance pricing, the practice of charging different prices to individual customers based on their personal data and online behavior, is a concerning and unfair tactic that undermines consumer rights. This predatory practice exploits people's private information for corporate profit, leading to price discrimination against certain groups or individuals. It undermines the fundamental principle of a fair marketplace where the same product should be offered at the same price to all consumers. We urge you to support legislation prohibiting surveillance pricing in our state. No company should be allowed to secretly manipulate prices based on consumers' digital footprints, locations, or demographics. Such undisclosed differential pricing takes advantage of consumers' lack of information and bargaining power. It is an unethical exploitation of personal data that companies have amassed through ubiquitous tracking. Consumers should have the right to transparent and consistent pricing, free from opaque algorithms that maximize corporate profits at their expense. Surveillance pricing erodes trust in the digital economy and disadvantages vulnerable communities. We call on you to safeguard consumer rights and prohibit this deceptive and discriminatory practice through robust regulation. Fair pricing policies protect both consumers and the integrity of our markets.
