Collins' VA nomination risks privatization, workforce instability for veterans

The nomination of former Rep. Doug Collins to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs raises significant concerns about the potential for further privatization efforts and weakening of employee protections at the VA. Collins has voiced support for expanding private sector care options for veterans, even stating "if they want to go back to their own doctors, then so be it." This aligns with the previous administration's push to promote privatization, which many veterans' groups have criticized as undermining the VA's ability to provide specialized, integrated care tailored to the unique needs of those who have served. Additionally, Collins has expressed a desire to "root out corruption" and make it easier to fire VA employees, echoing the controversial VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act which courts have repeatedly struck down due to lack of proper disciplinary procedures. Reviving such policies would likely face legal challenges and disrupt workforce stability at a critical agency. Rather than pursuing ideological aims like further privatization or easier firing, the VA Secretary should focus on improving access, resources, and quality of care within the VA system itself, which has a proven track record of effectively serving veterans when properly funded. Collins' background raises doubts about his commitment to a robust public VA. Nominating someone who prioritizes strengthening the VA's internal capacity and opposes risky ideological experiments would better serve the interests of our nation's veterans.
